Convicted murderer continues to appeal evidence in decades old case in Centre County

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A Centre County murder case that is more than 30 years old is still under appeal in federal court. The defendant claims he was wrongly convicted, partially due to the role of the FBI reviewing the evidence. It was along a roadway near Bellefonte where the body of a teenage runaway from Maine, 17-year-old Dawn Marie Birnbaum, was found in March of 1993. The following year, James Cruz was convicted of murdering Birnbaum and sentenced to life in prison.

Curwensville Lake hosting pirate-themed event this weekend

CLEARFIELD CO, Pa (WJAC) — There will be a pirate-themed treasure and scavenger hunt this weekend at Curwensville Lake in Clearfield County. Activities will take place throughout the park, along the beach, and in the camping areas. Those activities include "message in a bottle" along with an "eye spy" hunting activity in which kids can search for pirate birds that are scattered around the area. This is one of many themed weekends at the lake planned for this summer.

Resolution to rename football field in honor of Paterno pauses at trustee meeting

It’s drawn nationwide attention and controversy in recent days; the idea of adding the Paterno name at Beaver Stadium. Penn State Trustee Anthony Lubrano said, “Our proposal actually entails two components. The first would be Sue and Joe Paterno Day in the fall, at which time we'll unveil Paterno Field at Beaver Stadium.” Lubrano is among those heading the push to further honor the Paterno family, but there's plenty of push back, even from the university administration.

Teen asked girl if she thought gun was 'loaded or unloaded' before pulling trigger

2nd UPDATE |CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — State police are providing new details about Sunday's shooting in Brady Township, Clearfield County, that involved two juveniles. According to the affidavit, police say the teenager charged in the shooting, 14-year-old Aaron Klingensmith, reportedly asked the victim if she wanted to see his dad's gun. Investigators say Klingensmith then admitted to pickup up the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm handgun and pointing it at the victim.

Arkansas officers chase runaway chicken

Jonesboro, Arkansas — Two Arkansas police officers responded to a call on Monday that they haven't been trained for. According to a Facebook post from the Jonesboro Police Department, a local resident called for help to remove a chicken sitting on her front porch. Officer Nathan Swindle - a new recruit - and his field training officer Maurice Kinnard were dispatched to the area to apprehend the trespasser. While Officer Swindle went on a wild chase, Officer Kinnard kept a watchful eye on the situation to make sure the fugitive fowl didn't escape again.
