WASHINGTON (TND) — The Internal Revenue Service is expanding its program allowing Americans to file their taxes directly with the agency for free to all 50 states and making it a permanent option after what the agency saw as a successful trial run last tax season. A program to directly file taxes with the IRS would be a significant shift for the U.S., where a majority of taxpayers rely on paid services from private companies and has resulted in one of the highest voluntary tax compliance rates in the world.

School board in Oregon votes to stop parents, staff fundraising for teachers

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Parents and staff can no longer fundraise for teachers at Portland Public Schools, the school board voted, and now there will be only one foundation spreading money across all schools in the district. There are more than 30 foundations raising money across most of the schools in Portland Public Schools. Some schools raise more than others ,while some don't get any money. That may seem unfair to many, and district leaders agree, but others worry it might have a lasting negative impact on families.

Flooding due to mine drainage prompts closure of Franklin Street; DEP investigating

(WJAC) — Franklin Street in Johnstown was closed for several hours Saturday by the Johnstown Fire Department due to flooding. 6 News crews at the scene were told by a fire department official that the flooding was caused by mine drainage. Former inmate sues Centre County Prison over 'shameful' conditions, medical treatment

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — A former inmate at the Centre County Prison has filed a federal lawsuit claiming the lack of medical treatment and other conditions at the prison are "shameful.” Jessica Tressler says she was an inmate at the prison in April of 2022. She claims despite being in severe pain, she wasn't properly treated at the prison for opiate withdrawal and an infection, and was eventually transferred to a hospital for heart valve surgery.

Moxham community hosts 'Light Up Night'; annual Russell House Christmas this weekend

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Johnstown residents felt the holiday spirit Friday night at the Moxham Light Up Night and parade. The parade began on Russell Avenue and ended at the Russell House, at which time all the lights on Village Street were lit up and live entertainment played for the audience. Woman threatened local magistrate hundreds of times, police say

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Authorities in Cambria County say a Colorado woman is behind bars after she reportedly threatened a local magistrate, as well as her former employer, hundreds of times over a period of several weeks. Jackson Township police say the investigation began in mid-March after they learned that a woman, later identified as 46-year-old Sarah Byrne, had been repeatedly harassing staff members at the office of Magisterial District Judge Mary Ann Zanghi.

Alexandria man beat cat with broom, causing eye removal

Huntingdon Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Huntingdon County say an Alexandria man is behind bars following an animal cruelty investigation from earlier this month. Authorities say on April 6th, troopers received a report of animal cruelty that had reportedly occurred at an address along Valley View Circle, in Shirley Township. Troopers say the caller stated that 26-year-old Zackery Faubert had been house sitting for her and had allegedly called to tell her that her cat had reportedly attacked her son.

Altoona man facing felony charges for selling Delta-8 THC at a local CBD store

Last march a man told law enforcement his two sons bought what they thought were CBD products from CBD of Altoona, but it turned out they were Delta-8 THC gummies according to a criminal complaint. It states both sons were transported to the hospital for treatment. Delta-8 can be found naturally in cannabis plants according to the National Institutes of Health, and it can be considered hemp. In 2018 the Agriculture Improvement Act, or the farm bill, “Removed hemp and hemp seeds from the Drug Enforcement Administration's schedule of Controlled Substances,” according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

Dubois City Council terminates suspended manager over embezzlement scandal

Suspended Dubois City Manager Herm Suplizio has officially been fired. During a reorganizational meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Dubois City Council voted 3 to 2 to terminate Suplizio from the post. Council members James Aughenbaugh and Shane Dietz cast the dissenting votes. Suplizio faces a variety of charges related to the alleged embezzlement of more than half-a-million dollars from the city. In November, Suplizio and a fellow city employee were federally indicted following an investigation into allegations that the two conspired to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from city funds.

High lead levels found in Hollidaysburg water, officials not concerned

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) -- The Hollidaysburg Public Works Department collects around 20 water from homes in the borough every three years. Several samples collected last year brought back some high numbers. “I’ve been here 19 years and we’ve never had high lead levels in any of our water systems, so I was a little surprise to us,” said Rick Pope, Hollidaysburg Borough director of public works. Pope said three water samples, taken in the third quarter of 2019, showed high amounts of lead.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, officials said business slowed down and they laid off all of their employees. Man fired four shots at juvenile during 'emergency situation' in Portage, PSP says

Investigators say troopers were called to the home, located along Dulancey Drive, around 11 a.m. for a report of a shooting. Police say the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Cody Anderson, had reportedly barricaded himself inside the home following an altercation with the juvenile victim.

Workers at Shop 'n Save in Punxsutawney have been baking groundhog cookies since the beginning of the year. 1 dies after small plane crashes into Florida building

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (WPEC) — One person died after a small plane crashed into a building in Florida, according to sheriff's authorities. Deputies said the crash occurred at 12:04 p.m. Thursday near Fort Pierce at the intersection of Sneed Road and Orange Avenue. The plane hit a building with an RV inside, according to the St. Lucie County Fire Rescue Department. No one was inside the building. Video taken at the crash site shows the damage left behind, rescue crews were still at the scene.

2 injured in Lawrence Twp house fire, investigation underway

LAWRENCE TWP, Pa (WJAC) — State police in Clearfield say two people suffered minor injuries following a house fire early Sunday morning in Lawrence Township, according to a news release. Troopers say the fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, at a home located at 62 Palmer Street. The release adds that damage to the home was estimated at $150,000 and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Ebensburg woman accused of having sexual relationship with inmate at SCI Somerset

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Department of Corrections say an Ebensburg woman is facing charges, accused of engaging in both a personal and sexual relationship with an inmate at SCI Somerset. Investigators say 60-year-old Laurie Semelsberger, who worked at the prison as a Psychological Services Associate, allegedly exchanged over 700 personal phone calls with the inmate from January to August of this year. Authorities say further investigation revealed that some of those phone calls were sexual in nature, and that Semelsberger allegedly discussed intimate, personal details about her family, vacationing and employment history.

Investigators say the animal was found along Pine Hollow Road, in Ford City, Bethel Township, on Friday, Dec. 29. The state game warden is investigating the incident, according to aFacebook post.

Bedford Heritage Trail gets more than $2M in federal funding

Cambria County salon gives cancer, hair-loss patients confidence

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP - Losing your hair because of medical treatments can be traumatic, but a salon in Richland Township is helping people by pairing them with natural wigs. Niccola’s Hair Salon started the program in January and has helped about 30 people since they started. One of her clients is Connie Simmons. Coroner identifies woman killed in Woodbury post office fire

WOODBURY, Pa. (WJAC) — Authorities have identified the woman killed in the fire that destroyed the Woodbury Post Office last weekend. Bedford County Coroner Rusty Styer says 64-year-old Cynthia Louise Albright died of smoke inhalation and thermal injuries. The fire started around 6:30 p.m. on Independence Day, ripping through the post office, and apartments above, located on Main Street. Styer says Albright was a Woodbury resident. She was identified through DNA comparison, Styer says.

CHINA (WKRC) - Zoo patrons were left outraged after the pandas at an exhibit turned out to be painted Chow Chow dogs. The New York Post uploaded video of the "panda" exhibit to the publication's official YouTube channel. According to The Post, images of painted Chow Chow dogs at the Taizhou Zoo in China's Jiangsu Province have gone viral. The Taizhou Zoo's pandas were unveiled on May 1 and sparked outrage with many guests, who had come to see the beloved bears.

One injured after train collides with SUV in Cambria County

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Cambria County say one person was taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon following a train versus passenger vehicle collision. 911 officials say the incident occurred just after 2 p.m. in the area of Krings Street and Eisenhower Blvd. in Richland. According to a witness, the SUV was reportedly stopped on the tracks when it was struck by a CSX freight train. Flaggers were also reportedly nearby, directing traffic, as that intersection has seen a recent increase in traffic due to a local detour.

Volunteers needed for 2023 Thunder in the Valley, organizers say

GAZA STRIP (TND) — A 19-year-old Israeli woman has been killed in Hamas terrorist custody, according to a video released Monday by the terrorist organization. The killing of Corporal Noa Marciano was confirmed Tuesday by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), which released a statement mourning the loss of one of its own. “Our hearts are with the Marciano family whose daughter, Noa, was brutally kidnapped by the Hamas terrorist organization,” the IDF stated, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Bird flu found in beef for the first time, USDA says beef still safe to eat

Bird flu has been detected in beef for the first time, the U.S. Department of Agricultureannounced Friday, but officials said the meat from a single sickened dairy cow was not allowed to enter the nation's food supply and beef remains safe to eat. The Rite Aid on Market Street in downtown Johnstown is closing according to city manager Ethan Imhoff. Officer, driver injured after man crashes into cop car during traffic stop on 219

UPDATE |RICHLAND TWP., Pa. (WJAC) — Richland Township police have released new information regarding Wednesday night's crash on Route 219, in Cambria County, that sent two people to the hospital. Police say a Richland Township police officer was conducting a traffic stop, near the Elton Road exit, and a second officer had stopped to assist. Authorities say during the course of the traffic stop, a man had entered 219 southbound, via the bypass, and continued traveling along the berm of the road.

Three construction workers killed in crash on I-83 in York Co., road reopened

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — UPDATE | Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that three construction workers were killed in Tuesday morning's crash. Investigators say that a box truck, driven by a 24-year-old, crashed into a construction vehicle in an active work zone. The crash caused the box truck to strike the three workers on the shoulder of the road. Police say the workers were pronounced dead on scene. Southbound lanes have since reopened.

CRESSON -- A Cresson man is facing multiple charges, including raping a 17-year-old girl in late September. Frederick Brooks III, 38, of the 100 block of Easy Street, is charged with sexual assault, possession of child pornography, corruption of minors and indecent assault. According to a criminal complaint, Cresson Township police said the girl stayed overnight at his residence with a friend. The victim said Brooks asked her for sexual favors and held her arms down while having sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

Investigations could be slowed down with a ‘Ring’ that could make it more difficult for law enforcement to obtain doorbell camera footage. Protesters at University of Washington campus vandalize news crew's camera

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Police have charged a Bellefonte woman after she was accused of giving methamphetamine to children and bathing them in bleach as a result of her drug-induced paranoia. Bellefonte Borough police say Tara Auman, 33, faces multiple misdemeanor counts of corruption of minors and child endangerment, according to online court documents. Police say in early April, they received a CYS report alleging that Auman was smoking and providing methamphetamine to children.

NEW YORK (AP) — The judge in Donald Trump's hush money trial cleared the courtroom of reporters Monday and then threatened to remove the defense's witness from the trial altogether because of his behavior on the stand, a court transcript later showed. PIAA to change how they determine school athletic classifications

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association made some changes this week to how they will determine athletic classifications. 1-A through 6-A classifications are counted by a school's enrollment or number of students. Until now, when making classifications, the PIAA only counted 10% of students that lived in the school district but did not physically go to that school for athletic enrollment. Now, they will factor in all cyber, charter, home schooled, and vo-tech students towards that number when making the classifications.

"Detectives determined the child suffered prolonged physical and mental abuse," Allegheny County Police said. UPDATE:EBENSBURG, Pa (WJAC) — According to Dauntless fire chief Mike Sheehan, 3 people were rescued from Lake Rowena Saturday afternoon. Chief Sheehan says that two of the people "self-rescued" themselves and were able to climb back onto the ice. One other person had to be rescued by the water rescue team. Police said 56-year-old Thomas Bach, whose dentistry office is located on 504 Franklin Street, is facing a number of charges involving the administering of controlled substances by practice and refusing to keep records. Police say they were contacted by a DEA agent in July 2018 who told them there were reports of large quantities of hydrocodone and ibuprofen being ordered to Bach’s practice.

BEAVER COUNTY, Pa. (AP) — Authorities have found the body of a 10-year-old boy who fell into a river in western Pennsylvania earlier this week while trying to retrieve a lost shoe. An Altoona woman has been charged after police say a toddler was left in a hot vehicle. According to a probable-cause affidavit, at about 5 p.m. Friday, 28-year-old Anna Stern entered a Dollar General store along North 4th Avenue in Altoona and left the toddler in the vehicle. While she was shopping, a man had entered the store and was shouting for whoever left the child in the vehicle. According to the affidavit, after Stern spoke with the man, she chose items from her shopping cart that she deemed more important, and then headed to the checkout.

Altoona man claims he looked at child porn as 'research' for book he was writing

Altoona, PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General say an Altoona man is facing dozens of felony counts of possessing child pornography following a months-long investigation. According to the affidavit, the AG's office began its investigation in July after receiving a Cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Officials say the Cybertip was in relation to an image of suspected child pornography that reportedly depicted a female juvenile engaged in sexually explicit activity.

Dak Prescott's father arrested in Texas

ORANGE COUNTY, Texas — A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper arrested the father of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott on marijuana charges. A trooper conducted a traffic stop at about 4 p.m. Saturday on Highway 87 in Orange County. According to the DPS, the trooper discovered marijuana in the pocket of the driver's side door of the Cadillac Escalade. The driver was identified as Nathaniel Prescott, 57, of Pflugerville.

Pennsylvania teen with terminal cancer marries his highschool sweetheart

Canon-McMillan High School standout athlete Luke Blanock isn't letting terminal cancer keep him from making his dreams come true. Blanock was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer in December of 2013 when he was just 16-years-old, according to a Go Fund Me page created by his parents. Judge dismisses charges against Westmont grad accused of killing IUP frat brother

INDIANA - A Westmont Hilltop graduate accused of homicide in the death of his fraternity brother at IUP had all charges dismissed. According to a court order, charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault were dismissed against 19-year-old Brady Distefano. Distefano's attorney, Tom Dickey, argued that there was insufficient evidence to have the charges go to trial and a judge agreed. Two dead following murder-suicide

CLEARFIELD - Two people were found dead following a domestic dispute in Bradford Township Friday evening. Police said they responded around 7 p.m. to a residence on Hillbilly Lane and found both Donald Peters, 46, of Mineral Springs and Tammy Sipe, 43, of Hyde, dead from stab wounds. According to a witness, police said Peters had a large knife and stabbed Sipe in the front yard of the home before the dispute moved to inside the home.

Cheerleading Competition expected to draw thousands to Cambria County this weekend

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Hundreds of athletes from around the area and surrounding states made the trip to Cambria County this weekend. The Varsity Encore Cheerleading Championship -- called the "Encore Johnstown Showdown" -- is being held at the Cambria County War Memorial. This event marks the first cheerleading competition to be held at the arena since 2010.

According to the affidavits, campus police received multiple complaints earlier this month of a man who was allegedly filming female students inside Hamilton Hall. Police say at least two victims reported seeing a cell phone being placed over or under the stall while they were showering.

SPCA seeks help after rescuing farm animals in Clearfield Co.

The Clearfield County SPCA is asking for help on Facebook after rescuing some farm animals. The post said state police helped in the removal of the animals Wednesday. 4 women stole nearly $2K worth of items from Altoona Boscov's

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WJAC) — Four women from Westmoreland County have been charged after police say they stole nearly $2,000 worth of items from an Altoona Boscov's. According to the Logan Township Police Department, Courtney Jording, Terra Irwin, Melissa Irwin and Maryah Irwin entered the Boscov's on Falon Lane with empty bags Thursday. Delays loom in renovations of former Centre Crest nursing home

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — More delays are looming in the plans to convert a former, county owned nursing home in Centre County into an office complex. (TCS) — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is heralding a budget that Republicans say was crammed down taxpayers' throats in the dead of night. After the Senate approved the state budget package late in the evening Sunday, the House took the measure up in the early morning hours Wednesday. The measure spends $53.1 billion and increases a variety of taxes on businesses by about $730 million. State Rep. ALTOONA – An Allegheny County man has been arrested in Blair County after a drug-buy bust and search of his hotel room Thursday. Altoona police said a confidential informant purchased two bricks, or 101 packets, of heroin from Louis Campbell, of Swissvale, at a restaurant on East Plank Road. Campbell was arrested after the delivery and $1,656 was seized from his person, police said. Officers also searched his vehicle and a small amount of marijuana.

Those activities include "message in a bottle" along with an "eye spy" hunting activity in which kids can search for pirate birds that are scattered around the area. According to the affidavit, police say the teenager charged in the shooting, 14-year-old Aaron Klingensmith, reportedly asked the victim if she wanted to see his dad's gun. Investigators say Klingensmith then admitted to pickup up the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm handgun and pointing it at the victim.

Jonesboro, Arkansas — Two Arkansas police officers responded to a call on Monday that they haven't been trained for. According to a Facebook post from the Jonesboro Police Department, a local resident called for help to remove a chicken sitting on her front porch. Officer Nathan Swindle - a new recruit - and his field training officer Maurice Kinnard were dispatched to the area to apprehend the trespasser. While Officer Swindle went on a wild chase, Officer Kinnard kept a watchful eye on the situation to make sure the fugitive fowl didn't escape again.

WASHINGTON (TND) — Inflation slowed for the first time in 2024 last month after a hot start that pushed back the timeline for the Federal Reserve to begin cutting rates and raising concerns about prices staying higher for longer and requiring even higher interest rates to bring it under control. The decline was modest, falling to 3.4% from 3.5% the year prior. On a month-to-month basis, prices increased by 0.3%. Core prices, which strip out volatile food and energy categories, reached the lowest level since April 2021 at 3.

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Centre County say a Woodward-area woman pleaded "no contest" Friday afternoon in the stabbing death of her former boyfriend last April. Investigators say Brittany Guisewhite, 28, was accused of stabbing Robert Farwell during an argument at her home along Mountain Ave. Guisewhite made repeated claims of self-defense, as well as claims of PTSD and Battered Woman Syndrome. Officials say Guisewhite faces up to eight years in state prison as part of the plea bargain.

Clearfield hunter bags 704-pound black bear

CLEARFIELD, Pa. — Pennsylvania's statewide bear season came to a close Wednesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, Mickey Moore, of Clearfield, harvested the third largest bear in the state. Moore killed the 704-pound male Nov. 17 in Goshen Township, Clearfield County. Moore said he and a group of friends were out driving for bear and following tracks. He said the bear stepped out in front of him and he took the shot.

HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Officials say a Huntingdon County toddler is dead following an accidental drowning Friday night. According to the Fulton County coroner's office, the 3-year-old boy was pronounced dead on Friday, just before midnight. Multiple crews were called for a search detail Friday evening related to the incident. Officials with the Three Springs Volunteer Fire Company thanked those who assisted with the search. No further details about the boy's identity or the search have been released at this time.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A prescribing physician pleaded guilty to federal charges of dispensing and distribution of controlled substances, conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and health care fraud, according to U.S. Attorney Scott Brady. Brady says 50-year-old Dr. Michael Cash, of Indiana, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to the three counts Friday. Court documents show Cash, a physician with SKS Associates Inc., conspired to create and submit unlawful prescriptions for buprenorphine and unlawfully dispense the controlled substance to other people.

KERSEY - The Elk County Coroner has released the autopsy findings in the death of Greentree Landfill employee William Pierce. Coroner Michelle Muccio said Pierce died from compression asphyxiation due to environmental entrapment. Muccio added that the death has been ruled accidental. Pierce, 49, of DuBois was pronounced dead Friday, nearly 48 hours after he got trapped in a landslide at the Greentree facility Wednesday. Troopers say 76-year-old Richard Bartoletti, of Midway, Pa, was killed in the two-vehicle crash. DuBois man pleads to lesser charge after being accused of soliciting sex from 'teen'

Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — Online court records show that a DuBois man, who was accused of soliciting sex from whom he believed to be a teenage girl, has entered a guilty plea in the case. Kyle Logan was charged last October after police say he reportedly sent multiple sexually explicit messages to members of the online group 814 Pred Hunters who were posing as a 15-year-old girl. Earlier this week, Logan pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of corruption of minors, and the other charges he was facing were withdrawn.

Moshannon Valley Correctional Center to Close Next Wednesday

PHILIPSBURG/CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa — The Moshannon Valley Correctional Center will be closing its doors on March 31st. Since it opened in 2006, the Moshannon Valley Correctional Center has been a large part of the surrounding economy. JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Something new is coming to Johnstown. On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health issued 23 medical marijuana dispensary permits. Two of those permits were issued for dispensaries in the city of Johnstown. Franklin BioScience – SW LLC and Harvest of Southwest PA LLC will both receive permits as part of phase II of the medical marijuana program. Right now, the closest medical marijuana dispensary to Johnstown is Herbology, which is about an hour away in Altoona.

Steelers signing former Falcons, Bucs WR to one-year deal

PITTSBURGH (WJAC) — According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly signing free-agent wide-receiver Scotty Miller to a one-year deal. The 26-year-old most recently played for the Atlanta Falcons, and will be reunited with Arthur Smith, who has taken over as the Steelers' new offensive coordinator. Miller was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 and spent four seasons with them. He has played in 67 career games, recording 85 catches, for over 1,000 total yards and 6 touchdowns.

Tabitha Buck, convicted at 17 in Lancaster County murder, released from prison

LANCASTER COUNTY — Tabitha Buck, the Lancaster County woman who was convicted at the age of 17 in the murder of a 16-year-old decades ago has been released from prison. According to the Department of Corrections, Buck, now 45, was released on Dec. 21, 2019. Buck, 45, was re-sentenced to 28 years to life in November 2017. In August 2019, the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole granted her parole.

Bishop Guilfoyle announces plan to rebrand and expand

Bishop Guilfoyle will soon be known as Bishop Guilfoyle Academy after the combination of Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic School and Holy Trinity Catholic School this upcoming school year, according to a press release. In addition to the name change, officials with the school announced the opening of an additional site for PreK and Kindergarten, and ultimately a full elementary school in Hollidaysburg. Troopers say they first began investigating 32-year-old Mark Musser last October after receiving multiple complaints of an ongoing "mutual sexual relationship" between him and a 13-year-old girl. Police say the victim told troopers that she first met Musser in 2018, or 2019, while working on his family's farm.

State withdraws charges against suspended DuBois city manager; feds now prosecuting

Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — Suspended DuBois city manager Herm Suplizio appeared in court Tuesday, nearly two weeks after he was indicted by federal authorities on charges of theft and fraud. During the hearing, the state attorney general's office withdrew its charges against Suplizio, allowing the case to be solely prosecuted by the federal government. Earlier this month, Suplizio and a fellow city employee were federally indicted following an investigation into allegations that the two conspired to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in city funds.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, a personal care home offers housing, meals and assistance with medications and personal care tasks to seniors or people with physical, behavioral health, or cognitive disabilities who are unable to care for themselves but do not need nursing home or medical care. The Atrium, a nonprofit personal care center in downtown Johnstown was doing just that until Monday, when a press release was sent out stating that the center will be closing permanently, displacing 54 senior residents and resulting in over 40 employees losing their jobs, all in 60 days’ time.

Bellwood man charged with kidnapping and assault, state police say

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — State police say a Bellwood man was charged Monday with multiple misdemeanors and felonies including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping following a domestic dispute which occurred Friday night. According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Pennsylvania State Police, 34-year-old Brett Eugene Gates contacted the victim and requested to come to her residence because he was homeless and it was cold. At the time of the incident, troopers say the victim was protected by an active Protection from Abuse (PFA) order against Gates who is currently on probation for a previous PFA violation and has multiple past violations.

According to state police, the crash happened on State Route 53 south of Brewery Road in Bigler Township around 8 a.m. Troopers say a 17-year-old was driving southbound on SR 53 when his vehicle crossed into the opposing lane and collided with another vehicle head-on causing disabling damage. According to state police, the other vehicle’s driver and passenger were injured and taken to UPMC Altoona for treatment.

Teen killed in Route 96 crash in Schellsburg

UPDATE:BEDFORD CO, Pa (WJAC) — State police say a 17-year-old male was killed in Friday night's crash along Route 96 in Schellsburg. According to a crash report, the teen was traveling northbound, just before 10:30 p.m., when he swerved to miss debris on the roadway, lost control, and was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound. Troopers say the teen was pronounced dead at the scene and that the driver of the other vehicle was transported to Conemaugh Hospital with minor injuries.

Delivery driver in critical condition after being shot in Philadelphia

iCare to temporarily stop accepting COVID test requests due to backlog

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — iCare Urgent Care centers are temporarily stopping and restarting COVID-19 testing throughout the day so they can catch up on their backlog, officials say. They say this is due to an overwhelming demand and limited staffing and supplies. New mural being installed in downtown Bellefonte

Bellefonte, PA (WJAC) — Downtown Bellefonte is getting new artwork. A one-thousand-square-foot mural, located along the 100 block of Allegheny Street, next to the Waffle Shop is nearly complete. The mural was done by "Key Detail," from New York City, who have installed murals across the world. According to Downtown Bellefonte Incorporated, the mural pays tribute to “National Air Mail and Bellefonte’s role in that rich history.” The city also says that the mural will be officially dedicated, in a public ceremony, on June 28th, at the mural unveiling block party downtown.

Kennywood announces new security changes after shooting

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania amusement park announced new security measures Wednesday following a shooting that wounded three people, including two teenagers. Kennywood Park officials said the measures would include more police, more security along perimeter fences, limits on bag sizes and masks covering faces, and require adult chaperones for all juveniles at all times during the park’s Phantom Fall Fest, scheduled to run until mid-October. New information delays unemployment office discussions

ALTOONA --Two months after about 600 Pennsylvanians were laid off from unemployment offices, former Altoona office workers said the state of the unemployment system has gotten worse, and lawmakers said that recent complications have delayed discussions about a temporary fix. "It's gotten a little scarier now because at first we had hope, but right now that hope has gone downhill," said Kara Cochran, one of those workers, said. New Paris man accused of burglarizing multiple storage units in Bedford County

PA Only U.S. State to Not Allow Radar Guns for Local Police: Police Hope It Changes

Pennsylvania is the only state in the country that does not allow local police departments to use radar guns to catch speeders. Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Radar Coalition held a meeting where officials called for the state to re-examine its radar gun policy. MACON, Ga. (WGXA) — Almost a month after four inmates escaped from a Georgia jail, a third individual has been captured. On Sunday morning, 37-year-old Johnifer Dernard Barnwell was found inside a home in Augusta. Officials said large amounts of drugs were found in the house, suspected what is to be meth, fentanyl, heroin, marijuana and cocaine. The drugs have yet to be tested in a lab. This leaves just one inmate, 52-year-old Joey Fournier, who is still out there.

Troopers identified the victim as Dwayne Grove. Police say a 54-year-old man was also injured in the crash. PA Supreme Court hears case between PennDOT, State College contractor

In August of 2021, Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc., of State College, pleaded no contest to four wage theft related charges filed by the state’s attorney general’s office. Penn Highlands Health ordered to pay over $700K to settle false claims allegations

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Penn Highlands Health has been ordered to pay $735,000 to the federal government to settle false claims. The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that Penn Highlands hospitals, including DuBois medical center, agreed to the payment. The DOJ says the health system paid two doctors, who weren’t employed by them at the time, through submissions of false claims to Medicare and Medicaid. The release from the agency says the violations happened from 2009 to 2012 and was brought to its attention by a whistle blower.

1-104th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion deactivates

JOHNSTOWN - The 1-104th Aviation Attack Reconnaissance Battalion of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard will deactivate later this month. Former Johnstown home of Clara Barton undergoes restoration

More progress is being made towards reconstructing the Ludwig House in downtown Johnstown. The home housed Clara Barton, who founded the Red Cross, as she helped survivors of the 1889 Johnstown Flood. Clara Barton House and Gardens Inc. recently obtained several grants, totaling tens of thousands of dollars from local organizations, including the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. While the organization still needs more grant money, the reconstruction has slowly begun, starting with stabilizing the house and preventing more damage from the weather.

WEST PENN TOWNSHIP, Pa (AP) — Pennsylvania State Police say two firefighters died responding to a house fire where a body was found, while two people who lived in the home got out safely. The firefighters who died were identified as members of the New Tripoli Fire Company, Assistant Fire Chief Zachary Paris, 36, and Marvin Gruber, 59, Trooper David Beohm said. The body of another person was discovered outside the house on the property, which sits on a large plot of land in West Penn Township near Tamaqua in Schuylkill County.

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Blair County court officials say the civil lawsuit involving former Bellwood-Antis wrestling coach Ryan Blazier is now expected to be settled outside of court after the jurors in the case were dismissed. The civil trial against Blazier and the Bellwood-Antis school district was expected to begin this week after a lawsuit was filed on behalf of one of Blazier's victims. The lawsuit argued that the school district shared responsibility for Blazier's actions for which he was later convicted of.

PennDOT issues announcement on Centre County construction project

PennDOT made a major announcement on a major road construction project in Centre County. As part of the ongoing process to determine the new path for Route 322 between Boalsburg and Potters Mills, PennDOT initially also included what it termed a “Route 45 connector project” to possibly direct more Route 322 traffic to Route 45. PennDOT now says the Route 45 connector idea is dropped. Instead, they'll spend $3 million on a separate study on upgrading Route 45 safety issues in Harris and Potter Townships.

Man, 19, shot inside PA movie theater dies; suspect sought

HAZLETON, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a man shot in a movie theater in eastern Pennsylvania over the weekend has died of his injuries and a suspect is being sought. State police in Luzerne County said the victim was struck by gunfire in the arcade/lobby of the Regal Cinema next to the Laurel Mall in Hazle Township at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday. He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton. Police said the shooter fled from the cinema and left the area.

Johnstown Masonic Temple holds 5th annual Toys for Tots drive

Altoona native Jimmy Mowery was on his way to achieving his dreams of making it big in the music industry competing on NBC's “The Voice.” Mowery had gotten two chair turns during the show's blind auditions and beat out thousands to make it onto the show. But the votes weren't in his favor. Mowery didn't make it past the top 24 and was sent back to his current hometown, Myrtle Beach.

ATLANTA (TND) — The woman accused of trying to set the Georgia birthplace of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on fire has been identified. The Atlanta Police Department said in a news release that Laneisha Shantrice Henderson, 26, was arrested and charged with attempted arson in the second degree and interfering with government property. Henderson was taken to Grady Detention for evaluation and will be transported to the Fulton County Jail.

'Rebirth' of the Mill with Reliance Bank moving headquarters

More charges filed in Centre Co. drug investigation; State College man ID'd as ring leader

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say more criminal charges have been filed in connection to what police say was a large-scale drug ring operating in Centre County and surrounding areas. According to a recently released grand jury investigation, close to a dozen people were involved in the drug distribution network, including 46-year-old Larry David, of State College, who was identified as the head of the drug ring. Police initially arrested David in the spring of 2021, and say they found over 1,400 baggies of heroin in his car, but the investigation of David, and others, dates back to 2020.

Police release photo of man sought for fatal shooting over McDonald's order dispute

HOUSTON (TND) — A man who killed a Texas attorney that reportedly intervened during a dispute over a McDonald's order was identified. Houston police said on Thursday that 57-year-old Anthony Martin Landry is facing a murder charge following the death of Jeffrey Wayne Limmer. Limmer was trying to calm down an angry customer who became upset with his order, according to detectives KTRK spoke with. Landry, the "angry customer," shot Limmer after a verbal disagreement, according to police.

One man dead after vehicle accident in Fulton County

One man has been pronounced dead after striking an embankment and rolling over multiple times in Bethel Township, Fulton County, March 5, state police said. According to a press release, Hunter Shetter, 19, was traveling south on Pigeon Cove Road near the Frank Road intersection and struck an embankment on the eastern side of the roadway. State police said Shetter's vehicle traveled up the embankment and overturned multiple times before landing upside down.

Punxsutawney School Board decides on consolidation plan

PUNXSUTAWNEY - The Punxsutawney Area School Board decided on which consolidation plan to move forward with Wednesday night. The plan includes closing Bell Township, Jenks Hill, Longview, Mapleview and Parkview elementary schools. West End Elementary would be used as an administrative building. Seventh-grade students will move to the high school, with the middle school consisting of grades kindergarten through sixth. The board will vote on the plan at its next meeting June 12.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The Dollar General in Johnstown on Bridge Street is closed until further notice after it failed a health inspection. According to the Department of Agriculture, the store was out of compliance after an inspection Tuesday. According to the report, more than 200 rat droppings were found in the back storage area of the Dollar General and on top of products. Inspectors said they also found two dead rats in snap traps.

Man hiding in woods accused of shooting at school van with students on board

SHENANGO TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WJAC) — A man was taken into custody after police say he shot at a Lawrence County school van that had students on board. The incident happened along Route 56 in Shenango Township sometime around 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to township police. Officials with the Shenango Area School District say seven elementary students where on board the van belonging to the district. None of the students or the driver where stuck by bullets, but authorities say some of the kids were hit by glass as a bullet entered and exited through the van windows.

According to a press release, Ayden Beckage, 18, was traveling north on State Route 307 with a 17-year-old male passenger when he lost control of his vehicle. State police say Beckage's vehicle then traveled across both southbound lanes of travel and shoulder before going down an embankment.

Five female and six male ski racers have joined together to pose in a nude calendar they hope will help them overcome high costs — and scarce funding — on the professional ski tour. Called "Under the Suit: The Bodies of the Ski Team," the calendar features the skiers in naked action shots: Either on the slopes or mountain biking in Chile and New Zealand, or pumping iron at their local gym in Park City, Utah.

Punxsutawney man charged with girlfriend's murder in Jefferson County shooting case

2ND UPDATE |Jefferson Co., PA (WJAC) — A 20-year-old Punxsutawney man has been charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend in Jefferson County. State police have charged Dakota Greeley with criminal homicide, murder and terroristic threats. According to a probable-cause affidavit, Greeley shot and killed Trisha Renee Cole Thursday morning on Coyote Drive in Clover Township. At about 10:25 a.m. Thursday, police reportedly found Greeley near Coyote Drive where he fired two shots from his rifle, according to the affidavit.

UPDATE | BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Authorities have released new details about what led to the arrest of an Altoona woman for her role in a fatal fire last February. On Tuesday, police filed a multitude of charges against 43-year-old Heather Evans, including multiple counts of murder and aggravated arson, for setting fire to an East 5th Ave. home on Feb. 15th, 2022. Investigators say the fire claimed the life of 75-year-old Mark Stewart, and also resulted in multiple firefighters being injured while battling the blaze.
